Hey friend! I'm Karen! I am your go-to baby and family photographer with a knack for turning giggles, wobbly steps, and silly faces into timeless memories. With years of experience (and a whole lot of patience!), I specialize in capturing those authentic,  joy-filled moments that makes your family uniquely you.

Welcome to your daily dose of cuteness! When this momma came to me and wanted a teddy bear themed smash, I actually already had a backdrop that would work, but it wasn’t quiiiiite the look we wanted. If you don’t love making balloon garlands and want an easy to use backdrop, here is a link to the backdrop that we used as inspiration: Baby Dream Backdrops(https://babydreambackdrops.com/products/celebrating-with-teddies-big-one?_pos). Because we wanted some blues in there, I created a whole new look, and I love the way it came out! We used some soft neutrals, and some matching teddies, with a pop of blue, and adding in the twins in their matching outfits, everything came together beautifully.

We of course used a cake from my favorite baker, Sabrina Bakes(https://www.facebook.com/skothebakes), who as usual, knocked the cake design out of the park.

The happiest little cake smasher! I had Riley in for her one year old cake smash, we started with some portraits of baby girl, changed it up with some cake from Sabrina Bakes(https://www.facebook.com/skothebakes), and added in a splash session at the end. Riley had a blast, and kept us all on our toes watching her splash in her little tub from Denny Manufacturing(https://dennymfg.com/products/bathtub-photography-prop).

We went with lots of cute pastels in a balloon arch, and added in my favorite thing – confetti!

Some sessions feel extra special, and this was definitely one of them. This family moved out of state, and contacted me to do some updated family photos for them while they were in state for a visit. I used to do photos of their little guy when they lived here, so it was super fun to see them again, and see how much has changed.

We wanted some photos with a mountain backdrop, so Hatcher Pass was up at the top of our list for a session location. The cooler temperatures in the higher elevation can mean that fall comes just slightly earlier up there, so we managed to catch some gorgeous yellow and red colors as well as the mountains.

Little man had just as much energy as I remember, and we spent a large portion of our session just trying to keep him out of the small creek that runs through the area. We managed to succeed until the end, when we decided to embrace the water and we put some Xtratufs on him and let him go for it.

Thank you for choosing me for your photos!

It’s so magical to watch a little one dive into their very own birthday cake. For this session, we kept things simple, playful, and oh-so-pretty with a soft pink backdrop and plenty of confetti to set the scene.

This birthday girl really stole the show with giant smiles and so much personality. She also has eyes for her sister only – and would really light up any time her sister was in view. Baby girl was so excited after her first taste of cake, which you can really see in the photo after she’s realized that today might be the best day ever. That’s the joy of a cake smash – you never quite know if they’ll be tentative tasters or frosting enthusiasts, but either way, the moment is unforgettable.

The pink backdrop allowed a timeless and cheerful setting, allowing all focus to stay on her happy smile and colorful confetti. She finished this happy cake smash off with using her cake as a seat the end. Possibly my favorite cake smash move ever.

This beautiful cake came from my favorite cake baker – Sabrina Bakes(https://www.facebook.com/skothebakes). The adorable confetti outfit came from Threads and Evergreen(https://threadsandevergreen.com).

There’s something so special about watching a family grow right in front of my lens. I’ve had the absolute joy of photographing this sweet family for years — and now, we’ve hit another big milestone: Baby Aria’s first birthday cake smash!

We started with some photos with her big sisters, who we needed to come in and show baby girl that photo sessions aren’t so bad, and we got some sweet sibling pictures in the process. We used an adorable backdrop from R2Backdrops(about:blank), and no pressure, but I want to use this cute backdrop at every cake smash from now on.

I won’t lie—our birthday star came in with some serious grump face energy at times. (And honestly? I respect it. Being one is tough!) With those big eyes, I couldn’t resist that sweet face, even if it was glaring at me or giving some serious side eye. But after a little patience, a lot of silly noises, and maybe one or two rounds of peekaboo behind the camera, we started seeing those smiles sneak out. And after she had had a few bites of the cake from Sabrina Bakes(https://www.facebook.com/skothebakes)? Game over. Grumpiness: gone. Frosting-covered fingers and cheeky grins took over, and it was pure gold.

What I love most about this session—besides the adorable frosting face—is how it tells the full story. Real moments. A little sass, a lot of sweetness, and the kind of joy and precious moments that only a cake smash can deliver.

Happy birthday, Aria! Watching you smash your cake was such a treat (pun very much intended). Here’s to another year of smiles, snuggles, and cake crumbs.

I’ve been photographing this family for a few years now, and I love every session together. I love when families come back to me again and again, because it builds so much trust and the sessions are always so relaxed – this family knows my process, and knows I’m just looking for authentic moments, not picture perfect posed moments (although we do try to sprinkle those in there).

We met at an open field in Eagle River, and the sun definitely made us work to find some sweet spots that included both mountains, but not sun directly in our eyes. With a few breaks in the clouds, we were able to grab some shots with the Eagle River mountains, as well as some gorgeous glowy sunny photos behind us. Over the years, I’ve found that creating beautiful family photographs is less about the background, and more about capturing the connections between your family members. In saying that, it’s hard to find a spot in Alaska that isn’t beautiful. 😉

We wandered, we explored, we got a little silly. Whether it was chasing each other through the grass, snuggling up for a quiet moment, or sharing a tickle-fueled laugh, every moment was full of love and connection. Family sessions don’t need to be stiff or overly posed—in fact, the best ones never are. It’s the little in-between moments that matter most: a hand reaching out, a toddler and his older brother running wild with joy, a parent catching eyes with their kid and smiling like no one else is around.

This session was a reminder that the real magic is in showing up just as you are. And when you do? That’s when we create something beautiful together. If you’re dreaming of relaxed, joy-filled family photos, let’s make it happen. I’d love to tell your story—messy hair, goofy grins, and all.

Thank you for choosing me to be your photographer!

Barbie Dreams & Buttercream

When you mix pink frosting, sparkles, and a whole lot of personality—you get a Barbie-themed cake smash that’s as fabulous as it is fun!

Savannah brought all the adorable glam to the studio for her cake smash session, and let’s just say… Barbie herself would be obsessed. From the moment she arrived, our tiny birthday queen was ready to shine. Decked out in a an adorable dress from Always in Bloom Clothing Co. (who she is a clothing ambassador for), she channeled her inner Barbie with giggles, sass, and sparkle in her eyes.

The set was pure Barbie magic—think dreamhouse meets cake heaven: pink balloons, a shimmer wall, disco balls, and of course, a cake fit for a doll from Sabrina Bakes.

Once the cake came out, things got messy in the best way. She wasted no time digging in—smearing frosting like a true cake-smashing pro. Her little hands covered in icing, her toes kicking in delight, and a frosting-covered grin made every snap pure gold.

Barbie is all about being bold, confident, and uniquely YOU—and this session was all that and more. It’s such a fun way to celebrate the magic of turning one and to give your little one a moment in the spotlight (with a LOT less cleanup than if you did this at home).

Barbie isn’t just a theme—it’s a vibe. Bring along your babe’s favorite outfit, maybe a mini pair of sunglasses, and get ready to have some fun. Whether you go classic pink or add a twist with Malibu or retro Barbie details, the possibilities are as endless as your imagination. Ready to plan your own Barbie dream cake smash? Let’s make some magic, one giggle and frosting-covered toe at a time.

Who says cake smashes are just for babies?

This guy brought the energy and fun to his milestone session – and yes, we went full cake smash style with a face in his cheeseburger cake, because turning 5 is a big deal. It’s starting kindergarten, high fives for tying your own shoes, and having very strong opinions from anything from snacks to superheroes. What better way to celebrate than with cake, confetti, and colorful chaos?

For this session, we went pretty simple with a white backdrop, a cheeseburger cake from Fred Meyer, and colorful confetti, which gave our big kid the chance to shine. The best part was when he came in, he immediately told me he would be putting his face in his cake, and he delivered on that promise.

Cake smashes for older kids are quickly becoming one of my favorite things to photograph. It’s a chance to document a moment that’s often overlooked – a sweet spot between toddlerhood and big kid milestones. At 5, they are bold, curious, full of spark, and capturing them is pure magic.

If you have a little one hitting a big milestone – whether it’s 1, 5, 10, etc, don’t be afraid to think outside the birthday box. A cake smash is a chance to celebrate them in a totally unforgettable way.
